High Fidelity

Liz: You're really upsetting her, and him!

Rob: Like I care about him.

Liz: Well, you should.

Rob: Why?

Liz: Because all you're doing is forming a little unit. Them against you! Before you started all this psychotic madness there was no unit; there was just three people in a mess.

Dirtbag Gourmet: Mountain Guides Don’t Eat Tasteless Crap

I’ll never forget, on my NOLS course back in 2006, we were eating overly salted cous cous and pretending to enjoy another night of rehydrated vegetables. One of my instructors had packed herself peanut butter cups. Or a chocolate bar. Or both. And she sent herself more chocolate in our resupply. The most valuable lesson I learned after 17 days backpacking and 6 days climbing in the Wyoming wilderness? Pack chocolate.

So let’s be married here today these rushing waves to bare our witness,
And we will lie like river stones rolling only where it takes us.

The Hazards of Love/The Drowned, The Decemberists

We don’t have a word for the opposite of loneliness, but if we did, I could say that’s what I want in life…It’s not quite love and it’s not quite community; it’s just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together. Who are on your team. When the check is paid and you stay at the table. When it’s four a.m. and no one goes to bed. That night with the guitar. That night we can’t remember. That time we did, we went, we saw, we laughed, we felt. The hats.

The Opposite of Loneliness by Yale Daily News columnist Marina Keegan for the class of 2012 commencement.

She died in a car accident several days later at age 22.

“We Need One Another” (George E. Odell)

We need one another when we mourn and would be comforted.

We need one another when we are in trouble and afraid.

We need one another when we are in despair, in temptation, and need to be recalled to our best selves again.

We need one another when we would accomplish some great purpose, and cannot do it alone.

We need one another in the hour of success, when we look for someone to share our triumphs.

We need one another in the hour of defeat, when with encouragement we might endure, and stand again.

We need one another when we come to die, and would have gentle hands prepare us for the journey.

All our lives we are in need, and others are in need of us.

Don’t put your money on good behavior, just put some down on me.
Don’t lay in bed, so anxious waiting just try and get some sleep.
Maybe I am just a waste of time,
but I’m on your mind.
Maybe I just want make mistakes, I just want plans to change.
Come, meet me in the middle of a known mistake,
Come, kiss me in the middle of the cold and the rain.
Oh I’m in love with bad decisions, I just can’t play it safe.
I put my trust in good intentions,
Yeah I’ve got trust for days.
Maybe I’m just a little shy, but you’re on my mind.
Maybe you’ve got some plans to break,
I’ve got no plans today.
Come, meet me in the middle of a known mistake,
Come, kiss me in the middle of the cold and the rain.
